DennisFlood.com Photos of the Week - June 2005

Hot, humid, dry and wet -- not exactly the most common combination of weather patterns, but that's what Mother Nature has decided to offer this time around. There is more to life, and more to my photos than weather, but once again it seems to be a dominant force. The end of the month brings the end of my time in Toronto - a visit to the Toronto Islands and the city centre yield many photos.

Inside Union Station

Inside Union Station
June 29, 2005
Several years ago, I visited Union Station and was impressed by the vastness of the open space. Better travelled now, I'm not quite as impressed as I was, but, I still think it is worth a look ... all of those Canadian flags on the right don't hurt either!

Toronto Skyscrapers

Toronto Skyscrapers
June 29, 2005
Looking more the part of a tourist than a local, I couldn't help but gaze up at the towering skyscrapers in downtown Toronto one last time. These two building sure must keep the window washers busy!

Clothing Optional Beach

Clothing Optional Beach
June 29, 2005
Much to my surprise, I saw this 'Clothing Optional Beach' sign during my visit to the Toronto Islands. Who knew you could so readily see over-weight, over-tanned, under-clothed men so close to downtown Toronto? Not me.

Fishing in the Toronto Inner Harbour

June 29, 2005
Braver souls than I, this couple was happily fishing away their morning just off the shore of Toronto's Centre Island.

Mirror Reflection of a Railway Bridge

A descriptive photo title at its best.

Bird Flying at Dusk

Bird Flying at Dusk
June 26, 2005
I've always been amazed at things that can fly ... it probably explains why I always seem to be looking up when I'm outdoors.

Streaking at Sunset

Streaking at Sunset
June 24, 2005
Though I've never actually seen the real deal, clothes off, running at top speed streaking, I do like to see/make lights streak with my camera. Not quite the same I imagine, but I still think that light streaks are pretty good.

Waiting for the Train

Waiting for the Train
June 20, 2005
I decided it was worth heeding the TTC's advice and I did not enter. I promise.

Unmistakably Toronto

Unmistakably Toronto
June 20, 2005
No doubt about it, this scene says Toronto ... it's got the GO Train, the CN Tower and the Skydome (or as some guy with too much money would prefer, The Rogers Centre). Contact me for information about licensing this or other DennisFlood.com photos.

Night Riding at the 24 Hours of Summer Solstice

Night Riding at the 24 Hours of Summer Solstice
June 18, 2005
Mountain bikers work their way through a tight tree-lined section of singletrack hours after the sun has set.

Race Sponsorship

Race Sponsorship
June 18, 2005
What would cycling be without sponsorship? Or sport for that matter? It pays the bills, and at least in this case, I think that it even makes for a good photo. For what it's worth, I have used Shimano parts for several years, and I would be happy to be sponsored by Shimano (hint, hint).

The Race Is On

The Race Is On
June 18, 2005
North America's largest 24-hour mountain biking race begins - the front runners are off to a quick start. Why? More testosterone and adrenaline than patience I guess. Twenty four hours later, they probably weren't so peppy.

Two of My Loves

Two of My Loves
June 17, 2005
Two of my loves together in one photo - my bike (or at least my helmet) and the Canadian flag (in the form of a comfy folding chair). Nothing beats biking in Canada.

Riverside Shopping Gone Bad

Riverside Shopping Gone Bad
June 16, 2005
Another shopping cart in the west branch of the Humber. Am I the only person bothered by this?

Raindrops Are Falling

Raindrops Are Falling
June 14, 2005
A stretch of dry weather came to an abrupt halt as a big afternoon storm rolls in and temporarily floods the street and provides ample water for the fresh sod.

Green Maple Leaves

Green Maple Leaves
June 10, 2005
On the hottest June days, even lush green maple leaves can't keep the sun away. Bring on the sunscreen, sunglasses and sun hats.

Calling it a Night

Calling it a Night
June 07, 2005
An Air Canada plane heads toward home as the street lights signal nightfall. (The eerie glow is an internal reflection, and not anything UFO-ish.)

Seagull After Sunset

June 06, 2005
A seagull glides effortlessly as the sky fades from pale blue to pale pink.

Grass - Tree - Sky

Grass - Tree - Sky
June 06, 2005
A solitary oak tree stands above the long green grass beneath a blue evening sky. This almost sounds like poetry. (View a very different photo of the same tree.)

Stairway Up to the Heavens

Stairway Up to the Heavens
June 04, 2005
Okay, so it really isn't a stairway up to the heavens, but it is at least a spiral set of stairs up to the fourth floor of the University of Guelph-Humber building. That's practically the same.

Lonely Bleeding Heart

Lonely Bleeding Heart
June 04, 2005
I realise that I'm including an awful lot of flower photos this month, but, I couldn't resist this one. I've heard the phrase bleeding heart many times, but I never knew that there was a flower with the same name. There's only one word for it - neat!

Blooming White Peony

Blooming White Peony
June 04, 2005
I never used to like peonies, but I've begun to change my mind. The bright pink/red and yellow colours at the heart of this large white peony really caught my attention. Their smell is powerful and pleasant too, not entirely unlike the that of night blooming jasmine.

Fungus

June 04, 2005
A dying tree offers itself up while several other forms of life quickly move in and take over.

Trunk Growth

Trunk Growth
June 02, 2005
Is it a good thing or a bad thing when a tree trunk starts to grow leaves? Don't ask me, I'm stumped.

Plane Overhead

Plane Overhead
June 01, 2005
Even when I'm standing in the trees, I still can't escape the steady flow of planes approaching Toronto's YYZ for an evening landing.

Big Ears and a Skinny Body

Big Ears and a Skinny Body
June 01, 2005
With ears that size, it is no wonder that this young deer heard me coming long before I saw it. He (?) was stuck between a river and the trail where I was standing, and seemed to feel that standing perfectly still was the best way to handle the situation. Hopefully he's able to find a good meal or two to put some meat on his bones.
