A busy month of planes and trains and buses and travel ... of churches and beaches and restaurants too. Walls and floors and shells and celebrations ... July 2006 was a busy month for me in Scotland, England, Italy, Croatia and Hungary.
Budapest Castle Flowers
July 31, 2006
After several days of unusually poor weather in Budapest, the sun finally shone down on the castle, bringing the flowers and the birds, but not the statue of the horse, back to life.
Hungarian Patterns
July 30, 2006
I liked the patterns in the marble (?) that these Hungarian decorators decided to use in Budapest outside of the Basilica of St. Stephen.
Bullet Holes in the Wall
July 26, 2006
Thankfully for all of us, this warzone is now a thing of the past ... staring at these bullet holes gave me the chills. It sounds weird to say, but, I hope these were acts of vandals rather than soldiers.
Cafe Seating
July 22, 2006
This peaceful setting in Korcula, Croatia looks like it is primed and ready for some hungry guests. I'm guessing that they sell seafood?
The Croatian Flag
July 19, 2006
Yet another country displaying red, white and blue. In the background, Dubrovnik and its picturesque port bridge fade away.
On the Beach Slab
July 18, 2006
I never knew that a hot slab of concrete could feel so good ... welcome to Croatia.
Roman Paradise?
July 14, 2006
I guess things can change over the centuries, but, I really don't see this place as the paradise that the sign suggests it is. Perhaps I just need a little more vision.
Vatican Restrictions
July 12, 2006
The general rule of thumb for most of the churches in Italy was that you should wear fairly conservative clothing. Fair enough, but, I have to say that this sign outside of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome was a little confusing.
Italy Wins!
July 09, 2006
Italy wins the World Cup, and I was there to see it ... at least from my air conditioned hotel room in a small Italian town.
The Narrow Alley of Pisa
July 08, 2006
On my way to see the famous leaning tower, I couldn't help but notice that Pisa had some extremely narrow alleys, like this one. I loved the textured walls, and as usual, the strong shadows were catching my eye.
Comune di Firenze
July 07, 2006
I'm not much of a translator, but, I think that the sign is referring to Firenze (Florence), the city in the background.
52 Shadows
July 05, 2006
Nothing like strong afternoon sun and sharp angles to make for some interesting shadows.
Changing of the Spectators
July 04, 2006
The commoners were very restless on this scortcher of a summer day at Buckingham Palace during the daily changing of the guard ceremony.
Eros Over Piccadilly Circus
July 04, 2006
An angel of love flies above the chaos and noise that is London's Piccadilly Circus. Hopefully this angel has been blessed with patience too.
Beautiful Natural History
July 02, 2006
I was amazed at the sheer size of London's free Natural History Museum. In fact, I was so overwhelmed, that I never even made it inside the building.
Rushing Through Waverley
July 01, 2006
Seems that not everybody was taking the time to enjoy the spacious, naturally lit interior of Waverley Station in Edinburgh. I guess not everybody was as early for their train as I was.
